| Instructions for Flickr |
| |
We have a
large collection of photos at Flickr, and we'll need more this
season.

| |
The Flickr
photos are used for several purposes. All good
photos should go first to Flickr.
· fed to the website,
e.g. the photos on this page are
actually links to the small (240px) photos at Flickr.
·
fed to the blog (see Blogging, below)
·
news releases. Instead of sending
photos to news media as attachments, we send links to individual
Flickr photos.
· blast mails. They
sometimes contain links to captioned Flickr photos. |

Photo page |
Example: this is the
link to a photo from the training session:

All sizes: Anyone can click Actions > View All sizes above the photo
for selection of sizes for downloading. Especially useful for the
news media. |
| |
Photostream |
This home page shows
photos as they are uploaded. It is messy page not useful for
public viewing. We don't provide links to
the
photostream. We do provide links to individual photos and sets. |
| |
Finding pix |
Search
box in upper right corner searches the Photostream for any
word in titles or captions. Example: Search for Annie
brings up four pictures of Annie.
Tag
search for interns brings up 23 photos of interns,
including Annie.
Archives.
Photos by date taken and date uploaded.
We don't use Galleries or People or Favorites. |
| |
Tags |
Tags are like keywords.
There's no limit to how many tags there can be, and almost no limit
on the number tags per photo (75), but it's confusing to have
too many.
This
page shows all the current tags. Every photo should have
one or more tags. Use a current tag unless there's a good reason to
create a new one. |
| |
Tags & Sets |
In real-life households,
family photos can be found in albums and shoe boxes. The best
pictures are in the albums. All the rest are in the shoe boxes. In
Flickr, the sets are the albums, the tags sort of like shoe boxes.
In real households, guests might sit down and thumb through albums,
but not through the shoe boxes. At Flickr, guests can thumb through
sets as slide shows. |
| |
Sets (albums) |
Unless it's a special
occasion, photos taken on any particular day don't warrant a set of
their own.
Our special occasions have included the
70th anniversary and the
2010 birthday party.
Birdhouse day wasn't a special occasion, but it got a set anyway
because the pictures are so special. There is a link on the website
Nature Center 2009 page to a
slide show and individual photos have been used here and there.
Other sets have been created because it seemed like a good
idea at the time. I think it's a good idea to have a set for every
season, as well as Favorites, but some other sets could be removed.

Captions |
On a photo page, hover
over titles and captions to write or change them. |
| |
Dates |
Flickr shows dates taken
and dates uploaded. The date taken is embodied in the photo. |
| |
Management |
| |
A login ID and password
will be provided. |
| |
File naming |
Please rename photos
with a sortable date prefix. E.g. 5/7/10 = 100507-filename.jpg |
| |
Uploading |
Click one of the links
on the home page to "Upload photos and video." |
| |
Searching |
When we're logged
in, additional search options are available, like searching multiple
tags. |
| |
Resolution |
The best resolution for
uploading is about 2048x1536.
At that size, cropped photos are still big enough for our purposes.
Larger sizes can be uploaded, but they waste space and bandwidth. |
| |
Editing |
The built-in Picnic
photo editor is very good, especially for cropping. |
| |
Blogging |
On any photo page, click
"blog this" to send the photo to the Wordpress blog.
This way it's not necessary to upload photos to the Wordpress media
library.
Your account > Sharing and extending allows editing of the
blog layout. |
